San Rafael is the oldest city in Marin County, and may be one of the most interesting and diverse as well. Has 30 different neighborhoods, and a lively downtown shopping district, San Rafael is an eclectic mix of old and new. City will find a vibrant town square filled with restaurants ethnic shops, art galleries and Victorian architecture. In the 16 square kilometers surrounding the city center you'll find life in the suburbs of California at its best.

Only about 20 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, San Rafael is a perfect base of operations for the traveler. It is from the rat-race of the big city, but close to almost everything a family could want: good schools, recreation, shopping and entertainment. Another interesting feature is that the San Rafael real tends to be slightly less expensive than in many other areas of Marin County. There seems to be a tendency to travel further north in Marin, the more accessible real estate becomes. This trend can not last, however, as people discover the north county. It has a lot going for. The area is less congested and more open spaces within the city limits you will find in most of Marin County, San Francisco and other Bay Area cities remain still very accessible to San Rafael.

Outside San Francisco's famous fog, but still within the influence of the coast, in San Rafael climate is temperate and mild. The Summers are warm enough for swimming and Californians love living outdoors, but rarely is the heat that makes the interior of California, so uncomfortable. In the winter rain can be plentiful, as it is in all of northern California, but ice and snow are virtually unknown, as are the fog Tule in the Central Valley.

San Rafael has one of the most diverse and interesting architecture in Marin County. Probably the most recognizable and famous landmark is the Marin County Civic Center, designed by internationally renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Other public buildings of interest include Mission San Rafael St. Archangel Raphael, the Boyd House, which houses the Historical Museum Society and Marin is an extraordinary example of Victorian Gothic, Queen Anne style mansion Falkirk, St. Vincent and the School of Italian Renaissance Mission.

This richness in architecture extends to the residential real estate in San Rafael as well. No matter what you're looking for, whether traditional house, a Victoria, or something of contemporary design, is likely to find in San Rafael. Each neighborhood has a different flavor hip and modern classic kindly, and houses range in style from minimalist chic to the great Victorian lady.

For mid-century modern home enthusiast, San Rafael real estate can provide exciting opportunities for some house hunting. In fact, San Rafael is home to the largest grouping of mid-century modern houses Marin County. Most homes built by Joseph Eichler Homes and the Society of the Alliance during the 1950's and 60's still are on foot, and homeowners today are rediscovering these ranch-style homes that were the vanguard of design in the home 50 years ago.

Beautiful surroundings, temperate climate, and proximity to all amenities of city life, along with interesting architecture and relatively affordable housing, make San Rafael real hacienda most interesting markets right now. With the market leaning toward a buyer's advantage, he just might be a good time to have a look at what's available on this very special part of California.
