Electric Ranch

Horse backs me up into holes, trees, electric fences?

Riding a 10 year old Thoroughbred where my friend keeps his horses. The owners never come out to ride him, so he was ok’d to ride by anyone that comes to the ranch. I have ridden him a couple of times and he is getting better, but sometimes he gets frustrated and wants to go back to the barn.

He will try to steer me back to the barn and when I try to turn him in a circle to the go the other way, he will side step and walk backwards. He has walked me into holes, he tries to brush me up on the electric fence, and today he backed me up into the woods up against a tree where I could not turn him and he would not walk forward.

I’ve slapped his butt with my hand and riding crop, but he continues to back up. I have had to get off of him and walk him out in the open, but then he backs up sometimes when I try to remount.

Any suggestions?

I agree with Corrie, only add one more thing, add a little more speed in his backing and guide him right into something that doesent feel so good when he hits. In fact, you can guide him in a circle or whatever, just guide him where he isn’t going to want to end up…and for goodness sakes, don’t get off of him and lead him out…back him until he walks out with you on his back. Just make sure that you don’t get hard on his mouth causing him to rear, then it gets dangerous..don’t let it get that far, keep him on the ground with all fours and backing, backing, backing…it isn’t so much fun after a while, it gets old and tiresome and not a good idea.
