Horse Ranch In Montana
Which is the best state to own and run a horse ranch in?
I was born and raised in Orange County, CA and am sick of the city life!
When I finish my Business degree in 2010, I want to own and run a horse ranch, possibly some other animals, too, like llamas or cows, but don’t know the first thing about it.
I was thinking of looking around Montana, Wyoming, etc. but have never been outside of California my whole life.
Any input would be much appreciated!
Take into account climate. Are you ready to deal with northern winters? Secondly, a business degree is helpful but a working knowledge of horses is imperative. Cost and finances are other major considerations. Feed, maintenance and vet bills are at the top of the list. Time is another factor. Ranching livestock and any other type of farming is a full time commitment. 24/7/365. As for location, depends on how large an operation you want. Land prices will pretty much determine that. Where? California is not a bad choice. Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and Texas are also good choices. Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming are also big horse states. All depends on what you want and can do. You stated nothing of your experience with horses. You should have a good knowledge base before taking on an operation like a ranch.
If you have the finances and just want to own a ranch and have people work it for you, that opens up your options. Do some serious research before you get into it. The horse business is great but not for everyone. Good luck.
