The race dimple indicates muscle tone. It is the crease that runs on each side of the horse in the back. The deeper and more defined the dimple, the better the muscle tone. You can also search the rest of the horse to see if there loose or tight muscles.

Next look in the coat. A shiny coat with some spots just below the skin is an excellent sign of a horse that is in good health.

After searching the horse, take a look at the Jockey. Is regular driver or a competent jockey? If a name is not on the horse-jockey is likely just out for conditioning.
