Old Ranch Signs
Is my puppy sick?
I have an 11 week old german shepard that my brother brought home from a ranch. I noticed that she would drag her bottom on the floor and i read that it was a sign of worms. I took her to the vet and she got her puppy shots. But the vet said that the problem wasn’t worms. She had her anal glands blocked up. He fixed the problem and said she was ok. That was a week ago. Recently, i have noticed that she is dragging her bottom again. We normally feed her 3 times a day but today she did not eat any lunch or dinner. Also, we keep her outside during the day and i noticed that she was chewing on some grass and trying to vomit, twice. Could it be that she is eating something she isn’t supposed to? I am worried. What could be wrong with her?
A tech here. When dealing with a Vomiting Pup, it should be the Process of elimination: First, pups biggest enemy is Parvo which starts with decrease in appitite, less active, vomiting (diarrhea will follow), so get a Parvo test ! ! !
If positive & caught early, good prognosis.
Scooting her rear could still be worms, so take in a stool sample in a baggie when you go, (Best way to rule out worms). Or, as mentioned earlier, Anal glands are irratated or still packed.
Eating grass/vomiting is only a No- No if you don’t know if the grass has been treated or fertilized, which can be Toxic.
And as mentioned earlier, dogs will swallow almost anything. X-Ray would be my next suggestion, if pup is not holding down food or even water.
Could be an intestinal / stomach type infection, so a Bland diet (Science Diet, ID canned food is the easiest), which you can make at home (ask your vet or search on line for bland pet diets), then, when stool is normal, slowly add GOOD puppy food/adult food, while decreasing the Bland food.
Hope this helps some, but don’t wait on a Vomiting pup.
