Northern Arizona is a region home to a diverse variety of wildlife. No visit to the area is complete without a wildlife observation. In any time of year, you can see a wide variety of animals that are native to Northern Arizona.

Winter

Winter in northern Arizona is any anything but desolate. In the winter months, put on a pair of snowshoes and a walk in silence through the woods to see wildlife. You can listen moves Abert squirrels through the cover if you listen carefully. You can also listen to soft and hairy woodpeckers, dark-eyed Juncos and stellar jays.

In November when the snow starts getting earlier and lake ice, migratory bald eagles descend on the highlands of Arizona. You can take some spectacular photos the bald eagles during this period. Large groups of bald eagles can be found at Rogers Lake, Kachina wetlands, Pumphouse Greenway, and Marshall Lake. Elk also can be seen in these lakes.

Permanent resident birds can be sighted in the region during the winter include the pygmy nuthatch, mountain unemployment, and northern flicker. In the forests of pinon, juniper, you can see American robins, bluebirds mountain and white-crowned sparrow feeding on seed remains and berries. To see badgers, look out for enactment oval openings.

Spring

As the ice begins to retreat at Rogers Lake and Anderson Mesa Lakes, you may stain cinnamon teal and other waterfowl. In the Grand Canyon, especially at Navajo Bridge, you can see California condors flying around March. In the southern edge of the Grand Canyon in April, bighorn sheep and mule deer become more visible. In the spring, you can easily take pictures of tiger and face whiptails common-blotched and eastern collared lizards as they bask on warm rocks in the area.

May is the best time to see wildlife of grassland, such as elk, buffalo, antelope, and Gunnison prairie dogs in the area of wildlife Raymond. Grass in the spring and the wildflowers are abundant at this time of year when even the loneliest of the animals are tempted to go outside.

Summer

In Country Arizona high during the summer months, you can find hundreds of elk calf, bulls and cows in the afternoon at Mormon Lake. Birdwatchers can see Ibis, avocet, osprey, and at this time. In Upper and Lower Lake Mary, many of elk can be found. The Lamar Haines Memorial Wildlife Area is a great place to go see deer and elk in the mornings and evenings.

In mid-summer in northern Arizona, also becomes alligator season. Everything from lizards western wall of the plateau lizards can be detected along the rock walls of the Flag of Rio, which is in the Flagstaff Urban Trail System. Rock squirrels running for food also can be seen on this trail system.

August is another good time to detect the California Condors on the northern edge of the Grand Canyon, which also should look out for Abert squirrels. Signs that Abert's squirrels are in the area are cut pine twigs, the points of excavation around the base pine, pine cones and cut. In the House Rock Wildlife Area in August, the buffalo and mule deer are commonly seen.

Fall

During September, when the Aspen leaves change color, large numbers of elk can be found at Mormon Lake. Territorial bulls can also be found at dawn and dusk in forest areas throughout September. Monsoon rains start in October, starting the migration of waterfowl. View multitude of ducks and geese in water open before going further north. At Rogers Lake, you can see a variety of waterfowl and hundreds of cinnamon teal. Fall is the perfect time to drive along the Kendrick Road watchable Wildlife Park to see West tiles, Abert squirrels, red-tailed hawks, pine siskins, and more.
