Ranch Electric
how to reduce dampness in my home?
have a 3 bedroom 1 bath brick ranch on a concrete slab. In the winter when the house is closed up, and furnace is on the house becomes real damp. The walls sweat, the windows sweat, and mold begins to grow on the ceiling. The house is about 50 years old with the original windows. If I place anything next to wall and it touches mold grows even faster. I have to run a dehumidifier day and night which kills the electric bill. Is there anything else I can do to reduce the dampness.?
Moisture condensation is the result of something cold coming into contact with warm, humid air. ventilation and insulation are the only ways to rid yourself of the problem. Start replacing the windows or at least put storm windows up. Sounds like your outside walls are uninsulated too. On a brick home this is a hard fix but can be do from the inside. Consult a insulation company. Sorry, there are no cheap answers.Dehumidifier might be a cheap, band aide for now.
