Ranch Houses Floor Plans
What is the longest span for a laminate beam 9 1/4 by 3 in. wide to carry a floor load?
I am putting a second floor on a ranch, span 38’1 with a bearing wall that stops at 20ft on first floor.I beam in basement run the length of the house inside brick wall. Plans call for 2×10 16 ft wide sisters to excisting 2×6. I dont know if the load is to long with out the bearing wall. Was going to run laminate beam to cover the load from outside wall to inside bearing wall and nail hangers with the 2×10. These 2×10 would eave out 2 feet from outside wall.
best thing to do is call your local code enforcement people, or the manufacturer of the beam. That will take all of the guess work out. Myself, I would not go over 16′ and I would try to stay close to 12′.
