Ranches And Farms

How can you protect animal salt licks from the weather?

Hello,

My mother in law owns a ranch/farm and is having trouble with the cow and horses “salt licks” deteriorating from the weather. If she puts it under a tree or any covered area, the animals push it out into the open (those dirty buggers). Any ideas as to how we could keep it covered and or do they make anything that protects them?

We use old wheels to keep them up off the ground, but don’t cover them with anything. We have a couple of wooden holders (we bought from FFA kids). They are just 4 2×6′s screwed together. No big deal to make. I guess you could put one in a mineral feeder if you’re really worried about it getting rained on.

EDIT: I just thought about this…we also have salt blocks on the end of all feed bunks. The other holders I was telling you about are down in the pastures.
