Why is Austin so liberal compared to the rest of Texas?

Having lived in Austin for over 5 months now, I’m a bit surprised just how liberal it is. Even driving on some back roads past the ranches, I’ve just seen one “Obama ’08″ sign after another. Why is it so different here compared to the rest of Texas?

Universities are long considered bastions of liberal thought. The University of Texas churns out 5,000 graduates a year. Don’t forget Concordia Luthern was here, Southwestern is in Georgetown, Huston Tillitson, St. Edwards, etc.

Once those students come to Austin, many elect to stay. Addtionally, as Austin’s reputation as a liberal Texas city has grown, many liberal from Texas have flocked to the town.
