The Encomiendas. I assume you are talking about colonization of America by the Spaniards. Th encomienda made it a legal, religious, but mostly economic duty to take over the natives in a certain land and to ‘civilize’, evangelize and ‘educate’ them. These ‘encomiendas’ were granted to conquistadores, noble men and to a very limited extent to noble natives as well. It was not technically slavery because natives were ‘free’ men, however in practical terms it was as close as you could get.
Encomiendas comes from the verb ‘encomendar’ which translates to ‘to bestow’, ‘to entrust’ or ‘to grant’, so no ownership (of the natives) is actually given
